Living in West Texas (A 140 Years Ago)

KPBT, the local PBS affiliate will air the series Texas Ranch House beginning May 1st, at 7 p.m. The show will run through May 4th.

TEXAS RANCH HOUSE

110 degrees. 200 cows. 47,000 acres. And 15 people. Can they make it?

This new "hands on history" program was filmed right here in West Texas and follows participants as they travel back in time to 1867 to face the hardships involved in sustaining a working ranch in the old west. Viewers trail a family as they trade in their cell phones to round up free-roaming cattle, tame wild horses, chow down on pork and beans and try to survive in the Wild West. Reality TV Texas style!

As it follows the day-to-day saddle-sore, rope-burned life of the time-travelers, Texas Ranch House also illuminates the fascinating story of merging cultures and changing social dynamics in post-Civil War Texas and explores the country’s diverse ancestry.

The participants' profiles can be read at the Texas Ranch House website.

Texas Ranch House is the continuation of an experiment in living history from the makers of Frontier House and Colonial House which also were shown on PBS television. I watched the Frontier House series and enjoyed it.

This is interesting...I hadn't heard about it.

It took some digging, but it appears that the show was filmed on the O2 Ranch, just south of Alpine. A number of west Texans, including several on the faculty at Sul Ross State University, are technical consultants for the show.

Should be worth watching; thanks for the tip!
