Grande Adds 4 HD Channels

Grande Communications has added four high definition channels to their HD tier:
The History Channel, A&E, Food Network and Home&Garden.

This is good news to me (well, the History Channel and A&E anyway) and bad news to the wife. It means I'll be trying to hold serve with the remote control of our high def TV even more. But, despite these new channels and the baseball playoffs, my truelove has resources and recourse - two TiVos in other rooms.

We cut loose of our beloved TiVo last Saturday and instead embraced Grande's HD dual-tuner DVR/digital cable box. Now, to be certain, I'm sorely missing the "ta-took" sounds and the comfy interface, but there's no denying how nice it is to record in high def.

Keep me posted on the new DVR and how you like it, Rob. Did you get one of the new CableCard DVRs? And, were you at least tempted by the TiVo HD?

I exchanged my Grande-supplied Motorola 6412 for a 6416 today after speaking with tech support last night. My call was to complain about the low volume on Channel 71 (History Channel) and they decided it was my DVR since the problem did not appear in my other STB or on CableCard but no one else has complained. Alas, the new DVR did not correct the problem but I did pick up an extra 40GB in drive space from the swap. Does your History Channel have good volume?

I really want to try the new TiVo-HD at $299 but I'll hold out a bit longer. When they release the TiVo-To-Go feature on it I might not be able to resist any longer.

Suddenlink is about to add FSSW HD.
It shows up on the guide, but it's off-air. It should be on soon.

I'll trade you my Food HD and HGHD for your Fox Sports Southwest HD. Deal? Please?

Les, yup, I was sorely tempted by the TiVo HD but the expense of buying the unit, still paying the monthly subscription fee, and adding on the additional fees for 2 CableCards - well, it was a considerable savings to simply go with the Motorola dual-tuner box offered by Grande.

After about a month with this new setup, I'm very pleased. I love, love, love a bunch of the new channels that I got with the HD tier. The DVR UI certainly pales in comparison to the TiVo's, but it is servicable and the recorded show quality is great.

One thing I've noticed is that the scheduling info that the Motorola box downloads is usually far less complete than the data that the TiVo used to pull in. Quite often, the DVR records shows thinking that they're not repeats simply because the synopsis doesn't indicate otherwise. Dunno who Grande fetches their data from, but it's a bit lacking.
