The Senate has approved a 4-month delay of the analog-to-digital switch and the House could do so as early as tomorrow. The Public Broadcasting Service estimates delaying until June 12th will cost public broadcasters $22 million.
It's my understanding that broadcasters are not required to wait, though.
Edit: 01/28/09
The House did not approve the delay. Hmm.
Edit: 02/04/09
The House, in another vote today, effectively extended the deadline until June 12, 2009. Sheesh

As long as KPBT files the correct paperwork with the FCC, they can shut off channel 36 on February 17; they will be using RF channel 38 going forward, and it's already at full power.
KPEJ can also switch off February 17, as they will be using RF channel 23 after shut-off. They would only have to do the stuff they were going to need to do anyway (apart from notifying the FCC).
Thanks for that information. It's been confusing to me which stations can cut this month if they so choose. I thought all could but I wasn't sure about those that would be changing freqs again. I'd also like to know which local stations, if any, will be increasing the power on their digital broadcast after the cut.
According to the latest release from the FCC and their own website, KPBT will be switching off their analog signal as scheduled Tuesday night, citing the expense of operating the analog transmitter. They will be the only local station to do so. Since the FCC requires 30-day notice before analog shut-off prior to June 12, no other station will shut off before March 12.
It's been awhile since I last visited the KPBT website. Looks like it's been re-designed and is very nice. The new blog by the General Manager might be of interest to some also - if one is an American Idol fan.
