Tivo HD

I recently replaced my rented cable company DVR with a Tivo HD. A cable company DVR is not really bad but comparing it with Tivo is like comparing shirts with and without pockets. The Tivo has lots of pockets.

With a TivoHD you can:
Rent movies from Amazon Unbox and from Netflix.*
Stream movies and TV shows from NetFlix.
Share recordings between networked Tivos - record in the living room and watch in the bedroom.
Copy non-DRM'd shows to a desktop computer and burn on DVD.
Copy or stream video from a desktop computer.
Schedule recordings through the internet from anywhere.
Plug in an external hard drive for additional storage.

Also, a good selection of internet videos, including YouTube videos, and podcasts can be viewed on the Tivo.

I'm very pleased with the high-def Tivo and highly recommend it.

* Amazon rentals usually can remain on the Tivo for up to 30 days before viewing. Once you begin viewing you have 24 hours to watch the program before it automatically deletes. When purchased, a movie can be downloaded to 2 different Tivos (and to 2 portable media devices). If the program is deleted from the Tivo it can be downloaded again, anytime, without additional charge. Netflix videos require a Netflix membership but there is no additional charge for streamed video.

We miss out TiVo sorely and were very tempted to go the route you went, but the expense was just too high. At that time, the TiVoHD unit was still new, so it was in excess of $500. Then renting the 2 CableCards and then the monthly subscription fee atop all of that.

The Motorola DVR that Grande provides does a great job of recording very cleanly but it's a pale comparison re: the UI. It has a fraction of the smarts of a TiVo, gets it's program info from an inferior service, and doesn't know how to shift around to accommodate schedule changes or overlaps.

Did i mention that we miss our TiVo? ::sniff::

I had resisted the upgrade for the same rea$on but... Sears recently put the TivoHD on sale for $199 and although they never had any in stock locally Best Buy price matched. The monthly subscription for another Tivo was offset by the reduction by $17 per month in cable charges. Maybe it's time to reconsider, Rob! You know you want to. And the Netflix deal should make it v-e-r-y tempting if you rent more than one movie a month.

Well, let me correct those numbers a bit... Although the cable DVR was costing me $17 more per month, I will have to pay Grande for the CableCard now. It remains to be seen what they'll charge but I believe CableCards are $2.95 per month.

Love my TivoHD using cablecard from Suddenlink. Unfortunately, I bought mine at CCity a week before they announced bankruptcy. Then Sears put them out at $199. They still have them at that price. I'm paying about the same now for Tivo and Cable that I was paying for Dish DVR though I miss the Sirius music channels.
